Airtel has started commercial 4G services in Chennai on a trial basis, after which trials will be done in Coimbatore and Vellore. Though the company already offers TDD-LTE-based 4G services in 20 Indian cities, including Kolkata, Punjab, Bangalore and Pune, but this is the first time when it is using the advanced FDD-LTE technology in the 1,800 MHz band.
Good news for the existing customers in Chennai is that they will get a free upgrade to 4G services at the price of 3G. This is part of the ‘Chennai trial run’ to gather customer feedback.
The company has also signed a go-to-market deal with Samsung for 4G-compatible devices. As per the terms of the tie-up between Samsung India and Airtel, the two entities will promote each other’s 4G offerings at their respective outlets. Samsung India’s retail stores will also facilitate easy Airtel 4G SIM swap for customers buying 4G smartphones.
This is a welcome move in the technology sector and we hope that it becomes accessible to wider audience soon.
