Virat Kohli’s masterclass proves a little too much to handle for this new look West Indian team in the first test that they succumbed to such a huge defeat with an innings and 92 runs deficit in the first of four test match series. Kohli’s rich vein of form continues to flow whether in T20s, One Day Internationals and now in Test matches, there is not much difference; In all formats he is accumulating runs with such a finesse.
Kohli’s Dravidseque Calmness and thunderous streak like Sachin Tendulkar is becoming a very difficult proposition and a lethal combination for the bowlers all around the world to handle. His chanceless Knock of 200 was a pure exhibition of his supremely gifted test cricket temperament which is not quite easily visible these days.
It is also the first series under the able guidance of our Head coach legendary Anil Kumble which also starts on a very affirmative note for all the future assignments. I think innovative strategies like One Hour Test for the Batsmen during the practice sessions has started bearing the fruits for our young batting side from the word go.
which helped our team posting a mammoth first innings total of 566/8. This score was way too big for this new look Caribbean side which in the end made a big difference which they eventually lost with an over-whelming margin.
Kumble’s mantra for our talented but young bowling side was being borish while bowling in the test instead of trying too many different things at a time also proved a blessing in course of this test match that Umesh Yadav Bowled with a lot more discipline and precision which was quite evident with his total tally of five wickets in this match.
Mohammad Shami who was returning after a career threatening long injury lay off was also looked as incisive and sharp like his counterpart yadav that added an extra weight to our fast bowling department. In the second innings it was the turn of Ace Spinner Ravichandran Ahswin who impressed with his tally of 7/83 with his maiden five wicket haul overseas.
However Ashwin’s gritty first innings century while giving much-needed support to Virat Kohli was the highlight of this series opener, it was also the display of all round abilities of Ravichandran Ashwin. This innings of substance proved the biggest turning point of the match.
Amit Mishra also chipped in with three crucial wickets at critical points during the course of this match. all in all it was a complete team effort. Signing off on a happier note after this resounding win; in anticipation of many more mesmerizing performances from all the arms & ammunitions of Kohli’s arsenal in the upcoming matches of this series by keeping my fingers crossed.
