Deadly Earthquake hits NE India; 9 killed, 100+ injured

On Monday morning, 4th Dec 2015, a major earthquake measuring 6.7 magnitude hits the Northeast India, near the Myanmar and Bangladesh border.

Reportedly, at least nine persons were killed and over 100 were injured by falling debris in Imphal and other areas in Manipur state. The temblor ripped through buildings and roads, sparking panic through people scampering them out of their homes.

An official told sources that rescue operations have been going on in the quake stricken areas.

“A team of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) has reached here with relief materials this morning and another team is expected soon”

“Of the six deaths in Manipur, three were killed in Imphal West district, one at Jiribam in Imphal East district and two in Senapati districts”

The quake struck at 4:35 a.m. local time, about 20 miles northwest of Imphal, the capital of Manipur with an epicenter 17 km depth, wrecking buildings and leaving huge cracks.

“Damage to a few buildings, residential units and Government offices have been reported, including damage to a six storey building in Imphal,” National Disaster Management Authority

“Several building in Imphal, including the market complex, and roads developed cracks while walls of some school buildings have collapsed’ Officials

According to sources, many people were killed in neighboring Bangladesh and nearly 20 persons were injured in Guwahati and other areas in Assam by the lethal earthquake.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked with Home Minister Rajnath Singh who is already in Assam and asked him to oversee the situation. Moreover,he also spoke with Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and other chief ministers in the region to take stock of the situation.
