Delhi Law Minister resigns on charges of possessing fake degrees

Another perplexing case of wrong doings by an Indian Minister : The New Delhi’s law minister, Jitender Singh Tomar, was forced to resign on Tuesday (June 9th, 2015) after a Delhi court sent the minister to four-day police custody in an alleged fake degree case.

Police sought his custody saying his educational certificates relating to law degree were “fabricated” and he was required to be taken to Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh and Bhagalpur in Bihar to ascertain his educational qualification.

The Delhi Police held a conference later in the evening highlighting the four investigation findings that it nailed Tomar’s lie.

Watch the video for full details.

Following this incident, the AAP MLA Kapil Mishra replaced Tomar as the new Law Minister of Delhi on Wednesday (June 10th, 2015). Mr. Mishra got elected as MLA during the last assembly elections in Delhi and represents the Karawal Nagar constituency. He took the oath in Sanskrit during the Oath taking ceremony in Delhi Assembly.

He says, “It will be my endeavour to take Tomarji’s work forward. There is a lot of potential to develop Delhi as a tourist destination. We have a rich heritage. A country like Singapore can be the fourth largest economy driven by tourism. So there is a lot we can do in Delhi too. We will revisit the proposal to develop it as a heritage city.”

On the other hand, both BJP and Congress slams the AAP government in the Center over the charges levelled against former Law Ministers.

“How can we expect a government to work lawfully when its Law Ministers indulge in unlawful things?” asked Delhi BJP President Satish Upadhyay.

The Delhi Congress held a demonstration on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal following former Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar’s arrest. Led by state unit chief Ajay Maken, the party gave the Delhi government an ultimatum of 15 days to appoint a Lokpal or the Lokayukta.

Isn’t it a curious case of Indian politics? First of all, this incident displays the ease of possessing fake degrees and befool the entire nation! And secondly, no strong reaction found from the AAP chief – even after both the universities declared that the degrees possessed by Tomar is fake. In all this hush drama, the opposition parties are just trying to make brownie points asking the CM to resign? And what next? Will the Delhi tax payers money again be spent on a third time Delhi election?

The World is watching us – I think it’s time to have more mature government and mature officials in power!
