In a government-run facility at Kerala, four young athletes formed a suicide pact, apparently after incidents of ragging and harassment from the coaches. One of them died on the spot, whereas three others are still struggling for life in the hospital.
All the 4 girls were found unconscious in their room after consuming a poisonous fruit, at the hostel of the Sports Authority of India’s water-training centre in Alappuzha.
The initial inquiry and the statement from the family members point towards the pressure built by the academy and the coaches – which led to this incident.
A family member of the girl said that, “The girls were “under pressure”. They were physically and mentally harassed. Girls suffered injuries when the coach thrashed them with an oar. And if they complained then they were punished even more.”
The Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal termed the death of the athlete as a big loss to the country and initiated an investigation into the matter.
However, this kind of an incident is a National Shame. It is a shocking incident for the women athletes in the country and those guilty should be severely punished to set the right example for the budding sports enthusiasts.
