Raja Rajeswari from Chennai, has been appointed as the criminal court judge by Mayor Bill de Blasio, in the New York City. This is the very first time when an India-born woman has been appointed at such a higher level of authority in USA.
She took the oath of office at a ceremony in New York on Monday along with 27 other judges appointed earlier this month to the city’s family court, criminal court and civil court.
At the oth taking ceremony, the mayor went on to say that Rajeswari has an “extraordinary, extraordinary empathy for others”. He lauded her ability to speak in Indian, Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian languages, saying she put her history as an immigrant and ability to speak all these languages to work, helping to reach immigrants in the Staten Island communities where she served as an assistant district attorney.
Rajeshwari, 43, has served in the district attorney’s office for the past 16 years, and has been the deputy chief of the special victims unit for more than four years.
This is a great inspiration for all the females in India and I feel that there is no stopping back for such talent! Way to go for the Indian women:D
