The ageless wonder Leander Paes completed the career mixed doubles career slam with Swiss compatriot Martina Hingis with a hard-fought victory over the pair of Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig at Roland Garros on Friday by winning the mixed doubles French Open title 2016.
Leander has won Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon Open mixed doubles titles in 2015 with Martina Hingis, Leander was in the form of his life in last year before losing his form and ranking afterwards. But just before the Olympics he has regained his Midas touch by winning the coveted title and staked his claim for the birth of Olympics for Record 7th appearance.
This was Paes 10th mixed doubles Grand Slam title and 5th for Martina Hingis of Switzerland. Paes has also won 8 Grand Slam men’s doubles trophies while Hingis has won 5 in women’s singles and 12 in women’s doubles trophies in her illustrated career. She is also a member of International Tennis Hall of Fame.
The unseeded pair of Leander and Hingis won the final of French open with the score line of 4-6, 6-4,10-8 over the second seed Indo-Croat pair of Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig by playing very hard tennis on the red-hot surface of Roland Garros.
This title of mixed doubles major was not part of the cupboard of both Leander and Hingis before this elusive win. But on this Friday they won this title and completed the career grand Slam of mixed doubles despite being unseeded pair of the tournament.
The agility, focus and sharp returns from the net was the hallmark of Leander’s game on that fateful day. Hingis as usual a good baseline player showed her grit and determination to get passed the finishing line in the final. After losing the first set, they won the second set and in the third set hold their nerves to beat the second seeded pair of Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig.
All in all we can say that age is just a number. Nowadays people in 40s and late 30s are doing quite well in all the fields with their disciplined approach and supreme fitness regimes. Leander Paes should get another chance to represent the country in Olympics even at this age because he is as competent as any other professional tennis player in the International tennis circuit these days.
However, in men’s singles world’s no.1 Novak Djokovic has also completed the career slam by beating Andy Murray 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 to claim the 12th career major. Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez won the men’s doubles title by beating seasoned pair of Bob and Mike Bryan.
