Veteran Bollywood actress Sadhana Shivdasani, popularly known as Sadhana, passed away on Friday early morning, December 25th 2015 in Mumbai after a brief illness.
Sadhana, was one of the top stars of Bollywood in the 60s and early 70s and was known for her brilliant depiction of her characters in the movies and had given phenomenal performances in her films.
She was the style-icon and trend setter for Hindi Cinema especially known for her fringe hairstyle. Sadhna earned many names like “Mystert Girl” and “Haseena” during her career.
Sadhana made her Bollywood debut as an actress with 1960 movie “Love in Paris”, co-starring Joy Mukherjee, with whom she also worked in “Ek Musafir Ek Hasina”.
In 1955, she was later featured in Raj Kapoor’s “Shree 420” as a chorus girl for the popular song “Mur Mur Ke Na Dekh”.
In 1961 she starred in acclaimed director Bimal Roy for movie “Parakh” . She also co-starred with Dev Anand in movies like “Asli-Naqli” and “Hum Dono”.
She received her first Filmfare nomination as best actress for her performance in Raj Khosla’s thriller trilogy Woh Kaun Thi?, co-starring Manoj Kumar. The rest of the movies in the trilogy – Mera Saaya (1966) and Anita (1967) – were also big hits.
Her remarkable performance in the song Jhumka Gira Re from movie Mera Saaya, became very popular during that time and to this day continues to be a favorite of many people.The song was Composed by Madan Mohan and sung by Asha Bhosle with choreography of Saroj Khan.
Sadhna was born in a Sindhi family in Karachi, British India. She was named after her father’s favorite actress-dancer Sadhana Bose.
Her family fled from Karachi during the post-Partition riots and settled in Mumbai. Her mother home-schooled her until she was 8 years old after which she studied at Auxilium Convent, Wadala and Jai Hind College.
Bollywood actress Sadhana received the Lifetime Achievement Award from IIFA in 2002.
Sadhana was married to director Ram Krishna Nayyar for 30 years. After her retirement from cinema Sadhana refused to be photographed simply because she wants to be remembered the way she was.
Sadhna is survived by her foster daughter. We wish our condolences to the family. The actress will always survive amongst us through her great talent & work in films.
