New Zealand’s captain, the hard-hitting Brendon McCullum smashed the fastest test hundred in a fiery counter-attack that dragged his team back into the second Test against the Aussies at Hagley Oval.
Brendon McCullum, who was playing his 101st and final Test match, reached his 12th Test century in just 54 deliveries on the opening day of the second Test against Australia. His effort was two balls faster than the previous 56-ball century record, scored by veteran cricketer Viv Richards against England in Antigua in 1985-86, which was leveled by Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq against Australia in Abu Dhabi,UAE during the year 2014.
34 year old, McCullum celebrated to a standing ovation from the crowd at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, raising his bat to all parts of his adopted home-town venue.
McCullum said :
“I was trying to hit every ball for four or six. Viv was my idol growing up so it’s nice to be able to go past him on this occasion.”
“But he was a cracking player, he was an incredible cricketer. I’m almost a little bit of embarrassed to go past him, to be honest.”
The Kiwis, started out struggling as they lost quick wickets and were down 74 for 4 , but with blistering innings from McCullum (149 from 79 balls) and Corey Anderson (72 from 66 balls) , bludgeoned the Australian bowling attack in a gleaming 75 minutes after the lunch.
McCullum, who was looking unstoppable at one time, was dismissed by James Pattinson, when he was at 146. Shortly after his dismissal, Anderson, who reached his fourth Test fifty in 39 balls and was dismissed for 72 shortly before tea, by Nathan Lyon.
New Zealand’s Wicket-keeper, BJ Watling also slammed 58 runs in 57 balls to give his side some breathing space and a chance for their bowlers to hit back to Aussies as the hosts finished for 370 runs in total 65.4 overs.
Australian bowlers, although being hammered by McCullum and Anderson did decent job as Josh Hazlewood,James Pattinson, Jackson Bird took 2 wickets each and Nathan Lyon claimed 3 wickets in the 1st innings.
Australia is currently leading the series 1-0 in the two-match test series after an innings and 52 run victory in the first game in Wellington.
