PM Narendra Modi’s Surprise Lahore Visit

Indian PM Narendra Modi just made shock-waves around nations as he tweeted that he would “drop by” Pakistan’s capital Lahore on his way back to Delhi from Afghanistan.

PM Modi is to meet Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on the occasion of his 66th  birthday.

Reportedly, PM Nawaz will personally receive his Indian counterpart at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore.

Meanwhile, Indian Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj applauded the stunning move by PM Modi, by tweeting that the ties between the neighboring nations should be of a affable nature.

The fortuitous announcement of the PM Narendra Modi’s Lahore stopover belies the significance of the visit after a long period of cold vibes between the two countries.

PM Modi and PM Nawaz Sharif, the two prime ministers previously greeted each other in Paris during Climate Change Summit on November 30th, 2015. Their handshake and 15-minute chat was the lead-in to talks between the National Security Advisers of the two countries.

Recently, Sushma Swaraj also visited Islamabad for an Afghan conference.

The last Indian Prime Minister to visit Pakistan in 2004 was Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had recently turned 91 on 25th December.
