Recovered the Lost Glory of Indian Hockey at “Champions Trophy”, after 38 yrs!

The Indian Hockey team, with its new look, earned the ‘Silver Medal’ at London, HCT 2016. The magnanimity of the performance can be gauged by the fact that it is first ‘Silver Medal’ for Indian Hockey Team in 38 years. Last time India won the Bronze Medal way back in 1982 at Amsterdam since then we have nothing to show in the cupboard as far as Champions Trophy is concerned.

This ‘Silver Medal’ is a shining light for the Hockey enthusiasts all over the country who have been waiting for this change in fortunes, since decades. Formidable Australians won the final with 3-1 scoreline in the shootout, this was their 14th Champions Trophy Title.

Indian Hockey Team played spectacular Hockey throughout the entire duration of the match which remained goalless in the entire stretch of the final game till the end of regulation time of 60 minutes.

However, Indians played the brilliant field hockey, Mandeep Singh created a first opportunity in the 9th minute from the right flank but could not be able to convert it into the goal because his shot was a little off the mark.

Hockey Match

Australians hit back with a flourish and earned four back to back penalty corners, but astute defending by the Indians got them through safely out of this harrowing period without conceding any goal. Indians too got two penalty corners but the couldn’t derive any benefit from this.

In the meantime, Australians started pushing Indian defence with a more purposeful streak that resulted in a Penalty Stroke which was wasted by Blake Govers. Both the teams attacked and counter attacked each other many times but without much success, the score remained 0-0 till the fulltime.

The match was eventually decided in a shootout by 3-1. Australian Goalkeeper Tyler Lovell stopped three hits in the Final shootout to take his team to “Gold Medal” finish.

Nevertheless, Indians showed some sparkling stick work and gutsy display of attacking hockey to match Australians in the regulation time of the match, they only faltered at the end in the shootout.

But it was a spirited and outstanding performance in the field throughout the tournament which fetched them ‘Silver Medal’ for the very First time in Champions Trophy since its inception. They also raised the hopes of their Fans and Entire Nation for Rio Olympics 2016.
