Once again, there is a big agitation in the Indian Education Industry with a new ‘class’ claiming their share in the reservation pie. Hardik Patel, 22, is a convener of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), an umbrella organisation of Patel groups. He is leading the youth of Gujarat, who are vying for reservation in government jobs and colleges under Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.
I want to ask all those, who think this is justified – Is the ‘caste/background’ an enabler of higher studies or is your ‘economic background’ and ‘personal inclination’ more important?
Unfortunately, reservation in India is the process of setting aside a certain percentage of seats (vacancies) in government institutions for members of backward and under-represented communities (defined primarily by caste and tribe). And it is going to take a long time, before we correctly understand the meaning and importance of reservation.
